Mona Lisa’s Indifference

Mona Lisa’s Indifference

Mona Lisa,
your indifference—these days it stirs me, makes me weep, makes me angry—
it shakes every string of my being,
deeply moves me, profoundly inspires me.
It teaches me to know life,
to love life,
to honor my own pride,
to hold my head higher still.

Mona Lisa, that’s why I love your indifference
so deeply today.

And yet,
your indifference does not soak my heart with tears;
no glistening pearls roll down my eyes.
Perhaps the ground beneath my feet trembles a little,
but the earth does not split in two.

In truth,
your indifference teaches me once again
what it means to live.
