Identity:
This plant is very well known in West Bengal and is usually planted along the edges of gardens.
The stem grows upright like a pole and generally does not exceed eight to ten feet in height. Although it has branches, it is not bushy and does not become very thick. The wood is quite soft, and the bark contains fibers. These fibers are a commercial product, which is why the plant is cultivated commercially in some regions.
Olotkambal resembles the castor plant in appearance. However, in its early stages, its structure resembles that of the lotus plant, which can easily cause confusion when identifying it by its leaves.
When the plant is about to flower, the leaves at the tips of the branches become similar in shape to vasaka leaves.
This plant usually flowers during the months of Bhadra–Ashwin (late monsoon to early autumn). The flowers are red mixed with black in color and are very attractive. They look as if butterflies are perched on the plant.
At the end of winter, the flowers develop into fruits. When unripe, the seed pods are green; when ripe, they turn gray. As the seeds mature, the pods split open and scatter the dry seeds in all directions.
The seeds are shaped somewhat like a small flat chopping blade. Inside, the structure looks as if it were made from cut blanket fibers, with rows of black cumin–like seeds arranged neatly. The seeds are covered with fine, wool-like hairs.
Uses:
The leaf stalks, root bark, and in some cases the entire plant are used medicinally.
It is used in the treatment of diabetes, painful or difficult urination, mental confusion, and piles. It is particularly effective for people who experience the discharge of thick, phlegm-like seminal fluid either before urination or with slight stimulation.
For this condition, three to four leaf stalks should be crushed and boiled in one cup of water, then strained. This liquid should be taken once daily mixed with milk and a little sugar. Consuming it for a few days brings relief, and continued use for a short time prevents recurrence.
